In a recent paper (Melheim and Ling 2017) a new and exciting hypothesis is launched, claiming that the pronounced emphasis on images of boats in the Southern Tradition had its origin in the Northern Tradition, deriving from supposed seasonal gatherings in places with appropriate sea-bound positions, as reflected in the motifs by the presence of boats with specific animistic elements as at Nämforsen (Fig. 4.13). Another equally important influence, according Melheim and Ling (2017), came from the Bell Beaker culture advancing by sea, in search of trade in amber and metal, which helped to promote new maritime phenomena that enabled participation in the emerging Bronze Age network of long-distance exchange of goods in Scandinavia (Melheim and Ling 2017).
